Delivering Democracy Lecture featuring Forest Whitaker

You’re Invited!

The word “democracy” is one of the most recognized, venerated, and misunderstood terms in the English language. Its potential, however, has yet to be fully realized, because it is routinely distorted, misjudged and exploited.  In order for democracy to flourish, its origins, evolution, and potency must be discussed and nurtured by visionaries from various walks of life.

Icon, Forest Whitaker, will treat Phoenicians to a timely and creative discussion of the promise of American Democracy.  Whitaker is one of the world’s most accomplished actors, directors, producers and activists, and when chosen as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, their leading American diplomat declared that Forest Whitaker was considered “the perfect choice” because “he exemplifies compassion in every area of his life, with humility and grace. He does this because it’s the right thing to do.”

Date:              Tuesday, April 22

Time:              6:30 p.m.

Thing on Thursday - GameCon 2.5

GameCon 2.5, a gaming tournament event with a philanthropic twist, is an annual massive video game event sponsored at Arizona State University Polytechnic Campus.

In order to make an impact in the local Arizona community, GameCon is a large-scale food drive requiring all attendees to donate at minimum five non-perishable food items to gain entry. All the collected food goes toward supporting Sparky’s Pantry as well as local food banks, homeless shelters, and soup kitchens. Gaming, software, and technology sponsors bring gaming consuls and numerous games to campus for large student tournaments and competitions. Connecting students to expert faculty in the fields of software and game design, GameCon also endeavors to connect students to their academic pursuits, encourage them to become innovators in the field, and also make connections with the greater ASU community of scholars.
